Gemini South 2/28/2003 Site Manager: Diego Maltes Software Engineer: Christian Urrutia *Telescope Only secondary mirror is for optical and has tip-tilt function, but no chopping function. Secondary mirror has retractable buffle. Crane 50/5 tons. 110-ton platform. The 5 ton crane is used for CO2 cleaning. PCS - Primary Mirror Control System 80% of weight is supported by an airbag. 20% is by 120 hydraulic actuators. active optics is made possible by 70 pnumatic actuators each actuator has 16-bit cpu specially designed for this. Dome has of total 32 wheels, 8 drive. *CO2 cleaning CO2 cleaning is manually performed every week in summer and every two to three weeks in other seasons, spending 2 to 2.5 hours Dust here is probably more than Mauna Kea. Dust counter in the dome shows dust is the maximum around noon possibly due to traffic outside. Reflectivity is measured occasionally. Secondary mirror is also CO2 cleaned. 1 year and 5 months has passed since first coating. Next coating is planned in June with silver for both primary and secondary, which will take 5 to 10 days. *Staff Gemini staff is 18 day crew on the mountain and 50 in La Serena. 3 night crew 4 software engineers 1 real-time OS 2 Observation Tool 4 software engineer in Hawaii and 1 in Tucson, Arizona 2 Consult David Terra - Pat Wallace consultant - working for sequencers Chris Myer - Pat Wallace consultant 6 SSA 1 paramedic SSA's shift is 5 nights per month. There are 6 SSAs. Following OSHA regulation. Chilean regulation is quite much like that in U.S. 14 hours maximum work including commuting from/to Tololo. Day crew checks the system completely after 4 p.m. including CCD. *Control System They are finishing their real-time system. Telescope control system has EPICS running VxWorks, Huricom CPU. VxWorks LCU is used for WFS(5), TCS(1), Environment(1), Rotator/AG(1). Telescope control and instrument control is now separate because the telescope mount overshoots and needs readjustment. But once it is fixed, the unified control will be considered. MCS - Mount Control System Command from TCS to VxWorks every 0.1 sec Command from VxWorks to motor controller every 0.01 sec. LCU is PMAC. PMAC is used also for rotator and AG probe control. "Garrill(?)" is used for dome control. @8 VXWorks work on VME; 5 for wave front sensor, 1 for TCS, 1 for environment and another. Communication is Gemini -(Microwave)- Tololo -(Microwave)- La Serena - (Internet2). * Data handling system based on ESO DHS Store data in HD, then burn it into CD-R and the data is sent to Tucson. Data Habdling System is based on ESO. *Problem tracking system Problem tracking system named "Fault Reporting System" based on "Remedy" used in ESO. Remedy is a commercial product. *Source code Source control system used is CVS, source repository in Hawaii and Tucson. Hawaii is for real-time codes and Tucson is for high-level codes. *Development Instrumentation control software has been done by outside group, however, the lack of standard has caused the problem. They are planning (considering) to go to the local software group for instrumentation. Observation sequencer is called "SEGEXEC". Phase 1 tool (P1PP) makes sequencer scripts. But only Gemini-complied instruments can use SEGEXEC. Phase 1 tool was made by Kim Gillis, Senior programmer in Tucson. Telescope control system GUI is generated by EPICS GUI Builder, EDM, which is good for now for them. Some of the telescope control GUIs were made using Tcl/Tk by David Terra. Gemini software group is recently reorganizing after the former leader, Jacques Person(?), left. Gemini has not been finished - unfinished software, observing tools and low-level control software Instrument GUI is mostly used in engineering and in debugging. SEGEXEC is used to control instruments during observation. Original: J. Noumaru Revised: T. Sasaki
